Priority Terrestrial Species
These invasive species are a high priority for our program. They are not yet widespread in our region, which means management efforts can still make a big difference. When grant funding allows, our crews and partners focus on locating, containing, and reducing these species to prevent them from spreading further across Northwest Michigan.
Common Terrestrial Species
These invasive species are well-established across much of the landscape. Because they are so widespread, large-scale treatment is often limited unless they occur in especially high-quality or sensitive habitats. However, managing these species on private property is still very important and helps protect nearby natural areas.
How We Prioritize
Our species priorities are guided by regional expertise and the best available science. Environmental professionals from partner organizations on the CAKE CISMA Steering Committee develop and maintain a comprehensive list of invasive species known to occur or likely to occur in our service area. This list is reviewed and updated annually to reflect new detections, changes in distribution, and emerging threats.
The profiles on this page highlight some of the species we focus on most often, but the full regional list in our strategic plan provides the most comprehensive picture of invasive species impacting Northwest Michigan and helps guide management, outreach, and early detection effort
