About the event

This volunteer day will focus on starting native seeds that will be planted at Wildwood Harbor Preserve to restore a former golf course green back to functioning native habitat. After invasive species were removed in partnership with the Walloon Lake Association and Conservancy, we’re now entering the exciting next phase, reestablishing native plants to stabilize the site, improve soil health, and create meaningful habitat for wildlife and pollinators. The seeds we start together will directly support this on-the-ground restoration effort.

This project—and our new Native Seed Library—is generously funded by the Charlevoix County Community Foundation.

Native Seed Library Launch

As part of this new initiative, Charlevoix County residents will be able to take native seeds home to start their own habitat projects. Whether you’re planting a pollinator patch, enhancing your shoreline, or converting part of your lawn, we’ll provide guidance and seed packets to help you grow native.

What We’ll Do

Participants will:

  • Practice winter seed sowing techniques using recycled containers

  • Start seeds that will be used in restoration plantings at Wildwood Harbor Preserve

  • Take home seeds (Charlevoix County residents) to grow native habitat at home

Seeds will spend the rest of the winter outside, then germinate naturally in spring—ready for transplanting into restoration sites or your own garden.
